Interoceptive Sensitivity and Self-Reports of Emotional Experience.

People differ in the extent to which they emphasize feelings of activation or deactivation in their verbal reports of experienced emotion, termed arousal focus (AF). Two multimethod studies indicate that AF is linked to heightened interoceptive sensitivity (as measured by performance on a heartbeat detection task). People who were more sensitive to their heartbeats emphasized feelings of activation and deactivation when reporting their experiences of emotion over time more than did those who were less sensitive. This relationship was not accounted for by several other variables, including simple language effects. Implications for the role of interoception in experienced emotion and the validity of self-reported emotion are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

The survival and growth of ovine afferent lymph dendritic cells in culture depends on tumour necrosis factor-alpha and is enhanced by granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor but inhibited by interferon-gamma

An in vitro culture system is described which allows an analysis of the signals responsible for the survival, growth and functional maturation of afferent lymph dendritic cells (ALDC), a subpopulation of migrating dermal dendritic cells involved in antigen carriage and presentation to T-cells. Purified ALDC survived and grew for up to 30 days in lymph node conditioned medium and survived 14 days in recombinant ovine (rov) TNF-alpha whereas none were detected after 24 h in rov GM-CSF, rov IFN-gamma or rh M-CSF. However, when rov GM-CSF was added to cultures along with rov TNF-alpha, increased numbers of ALDC compared with input numbers (growth) were recorded on Days 14 and 21. In contrast, when 50-200 units ml-1 of rov IFN-gamma were added to cultures of ALDC along with TNF-alpha or rov TNF-alpha plus rov GM-CSF, cell survival and growth was inhibited. Antibody blocking studies confirmed the cytokine specificity of these effects. ALDC cultured in rov TNF-alpha or rov TNF-alpha plus rov GM-CSF retained MHC Class-II and ov CD-1 antigen expression and accessory function for autologous ov CD-4 T-cell proliferation, although at reduced levels compared with freshly isolated cells. Neither fresh nor cultured ALDC expressed coagulation factor XIIIa.     

Expressed emotion and subclinical psychopathology observable within the transactions between schizophrenic patients and their family members.

The authors examined whether young, recently discharged schizophrenic patients from high (n?=?34) and low (n?=?14) expressed emotion (EE) families differ in their level of subclinical symptomatology during a direct interaction task. Compared with patients from low-EE homes, patients from high-EE homes showed significantly more odd and disruptive behavior with family members. High-EE relatives were more likely than low-EE relatives to respond with criticism to the first unusual thought verbalized by the patient; when this occurred, the probability of a second unusual thought was augmented. Results suggest that high-EE family members may display negative attitudes toward patients in part because they are exposed to higher levels of unusual or disruptive behavior than low-EE relatives. The data also support a bidirectional, transactional model of the relationship between relatives' EE and patient psychopathology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Precision edge contrast and orientation estimation

The contrast and orientation estimation accuracy of several edge operators that have been proposed in the literature is examined both for the noiseless case and in the presence of additive Gaussian noise. The test image is an ideal step edge that has been sampled with a square-aperture grid. The effects of subpixel translations and rotations of the edge on the performance of the operators are studied. It is shown that the effect of subpixel translations of an edge can generate more error than moderate noise levels. Methods with improved results are presented for Sobel angle estimates and the Nevatia-Babu operator, and theoretical noise performance evaluations are also provided. An edge operator based on two-dimensional spatial moments is presented. All methods are compared according to worst-case and RMS error in an ideal noiseless situation and RMS error under various noise levels     

Phenomena-based thermal-hydraulic modeling requirements for systems analysis of a Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor

The Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (MHTGR) is a candidate design for new production and commercial power nuclear reactors. The MHTGR has inherent safety features including: (1) passive shutdown and decay heat removal, (2) reduced requirements for operator intervention, thereby reducing sensitivity to operator error, and (3) long time intervals for corrective action. In support of the Department of Energy's (DOE) initial development of the design, the authors have completed an evaluation of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena that will dominate the plant response during representative normal, off-normal and accident conditions. Phenomena having significance to the plant behavior have been identified, and ranked with respect to their relative importance in satisfying operational, investment and/or safety criteria. The resulting information provides the basis for evaluating the applicability of existing computer codes, and defines the requirements for the development of new codes, for thermal-hydraulic systems analysis. The phenomena-based requirements also support the quality assurance related verification and validation of these codes. This paper briefly describes the methodology employed, and gives illustrative examples of the resulting requirements. References are cited for reports that document the full body of requirements and provide additional information for the methodology.

Spontaneous platelet activation and aggregation during obstructive sleep apnea and its response to therapy with nasal continuous positive airway pressure. A preliminary investigation

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine whether alterations of platelet reactivity occur during obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and, if so, whether therapy with nasal-continuous positive airway pressure (N-CPAP) alters this reactivity. DESIGN: Patients with suspected moderate to severe OSA had blood drawn for spontaneous platelet aggregation (sAGG) and activation (sACT) measurements at hourly intervals during diagnostic polysomnography (PSG) and, in those with confirmed OSA, on a separate night during which N-CPAP was applied. SETTING: Tertiary care center sleep laboratory. PATIENTS: Six patients with OSA had matched blood samples drawn on both diagnostic and N-CPAP treatment nights. Five patients without confirmed OSA served as controls. INTERVENTIONS: N-CPAP was applied to those patients with OSA and pressures adjusted with goals of eliminating apneas; N-CPAP was then maintained through the night. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: sACT and sAGG were measured using flow cytometric determination of P-selectin expression using a monoclonal antibody. Platelet aggregation was assessed by measuring the proportion of platelets larger than resting platelets by light scatter techniques. Mean values for sACT and sAGG were higher on the diagnostic night compared with treatment night (p = 0.001 and p = 0.003, analysis of variance, respectively). The mean baseline supine sACT compared with completion supine sACT for both diagnostic and N-CPAP nights also revealed significant differences (mean = 16.6 +/- 3.5% vs 36.9 +/- 7.5%, p = 0.04; and 11.9 +/- 3% vs 39.5 +/- 9.1%, p = 0.04). Platelet activation during sleep in five subjects without OSA resembles that found in patients with OSA during N-CPAP. CONCLUSIONS: Increased platelet sACT and sAGG occur during sleep in patients with OSA. This effect is greatly reduced by N-CPAP.     

Nonlinear Stress-Strain Relationship of Soil Reinforced with Flexible Geofibers

A nonlinear stress-strain relationship of soil reinforced with flexible geofibers under static loading is derived based on a nonlinear elastic stress-strain relationship of soil and a linear elastic stress-strain relationship of geofibers in the paper. This investigation includes the following aspects: First, the homogenization technique is introduced to find the volume average stress tensor and volume average strain tensor and further an elastic incremental stress-strain relation is introduced to describe deviatoric shear stress-axial strain relationship of equivalent homogeneous geofiber-reinforced soil. Second, the relation of geofiber numbers, content, mechanical behavior, distribution, and geometrical features to shear modulus of geofiber-reinforced soil is expressed and assessed by employing an elastic energy method. Third, the deviatoric shear stress and axial strain curves of geofiber-reinforced soil are calibrated by laboratory testing data of geofiber reinforced soil samples. Finally, the theoretical computational curves of geofiber reinforced soil are compared with the curves calibrated by testing data of geofiber reinforced soil. The model prediction has a good agreement with experimental results.
